Meetings are generally difficult because you are working with people. In other words, leading meetings has everything to do with your relational skills.

Consider this:

  • Your meetings are a reflection of your team dynamics: the interactions and behaviors displayed by team members during a meeting directly reflect the overall dynamics of the group, including their communication styles, power structures, and ability to collaborate.  This ultimately influences the meeting's outcome and the team's effectiveness. When you do not acknowledge this, you cannot move your team meetings from good to great.

  • Your meetings are a reflection of your planning skills. When the goals, strategies and initiatives are not aligned on annually/quarterly/monthly, your meetings (especially the operations meetings) are not productive.  Every meeting should be a micro reflection of the business mission, the annual plan or your multi-year initiatives.

  • Your meetings are a reflection of your communication skills. Can you state a clear purpose or objective? Can you make a request? Can you make good, fast decisions? Can you ask all people to keep the agreements or align to the decision? Can you speak directly, and can you listen well?
